The Alternative Press- Summit Education Foundations Announces Endowment For 25 years, SEF has funded educational programs in the public school system through grants. These include ongoing Family Math and Science program, Moving Images at the High School as well as books, SMART boards and so much more. During this time, SEF has successfully relied on an annual appeal to support the grants. On Friday, October 1, the organization is going public with a new source of funding, announcing an endowment which will ensure a reliable income to help support long term projects. “SEF is taking a proactive step,” says Nora Radest, former SEF president, “in establishing this endowment. Three years ago we entered the exploratory phase of the program and have since raised $3.5 million dollars. Now we are going public.”

The Summit Educational Foundation received a generous $1,500 donation from Stapes last week.  Charlie Leone, the new Summit Staples store manager, presented the check to Nora Radest with the following words explaining their gift: “Staples created the Staples Foundation for Learning to provide educational opportunities to people from all walks of life by offering financial support to organizations that teach, train and inspire.  We are a national partner with several organizations, and we proudly support hundreds of local non-profits across the nation in communities like Summit”.  SEF’s mission is to enhance the learning experience of all the children attending all of public schools and the SEF Board was thrilled to receive this kind of support from a member of the local business community.

Letter from superintendent Nathan Parker
Dear Parents,
We are all aware of the tough economic times that New Jersey Public are facing. In Summit we have just come through a difficult budget process in which we had to cope with the loss of all state aid - more then 2.5 million for the upcoming school year. The financial struggle will continue, and more and more we will have to rely on the generosity of the Summit community to help us provide the level of education that our students deserve and the community expects. We can not be satisfied with less.

After 33 years in operation the Community School is closing down and distributing its funds.  According to Betty Metzger, SACS Board President, “Our school [SACS] was founded on the premise that learning is a lifelong opportunity...it seemed appropriate to divide the remaining school funds among the educational foundations of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit.  That is what the Board voted to do”.  The Summit Educational Foundation was delighted to receive the gift and will put the money to good use as 77 grants were approved this school year.  SEF’s mission is to help enhance the educational experience for all of the children at all 8 of Summit’s public schools.
